Finding authentic happiness in the Christian life

happiness-willofGod-quote-lmHow do we find authentic happiness within the Christian life? Especially when we look around us and the social environment is filled with folly and false impressions of what is authentic happiness? The Psalmist records the following:

Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, and He will do it. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light And your judgment as the noonday. Rest in the LORD and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes. Cease from anger and forsake wrath; Do not fret; it leads only to evildoing. For evildoers will be cut off, But those who wait for the LORD, they will inherit the land. Yet a little while and the wicked man will be no more; And you will look carefully for his place and he will not be there. But the humble will inherit the land And will delight themselves in abundant prosperity. The wicked plots against the righteous; And gnashes at him with his teeth. The Lord laughs at him, For He sees his day is coming. The wicked have drawn the sword and bent their bow, To cast down the afflicted and the needy, To slay those who are upright in conduct. Psalm 37: 1-14 NASB

Finding happiness within the Christian life rests upon whether or not we have submitted ourselves over to the will and desire of a Sovereign God. The more we seek after the will of our Heavenly Father, and the more we conform our lives to the example of Jesus Christ, the greater our joy and happiness will become in this life and then extending into the life that is to come. For the Christian, happiness is not a fleeting moment that rests upon external factors. It comes within the core essence of who we are and what we are about. The scriptures (both Old and New Testament) reflects on the nature of how we can walk in happiness and joy.

For instance, consider James 1:2 that reads: count it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials. The third verse provides the understanding of why it is beneficial for us to be joyful when encountering various trials: knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. In essence, we are to find joy within our trials because it is testing our character and faith in Jesus Christ and where our allegiance rests. It is not about us rejoicing because we are enduring suffering and trials, it is finding joy in knowing that through our faith in Jesus Christ, we will be able to endure and overcome as Christ has endured and overcome (See Revelation 3:21).

The best place to find the nature of happiness and how to become an authentic Christian is summed up in the beatitudes of Christ’s teachings. The best study on the nature of the Beatitudes and how these simple teachings develop a spiritually mature Christian, also address the well-spring of true happiness within the Christian life. John MacArthur teaches the following:

Many Christians wonder if they are experiencing true happiness. The happiness of believers is one of Christ’s main concerns. That is evident because Jesus’ first recorded sermon (the Sermon on the Mount) begins with the theme of happiness. In Matthew 5:1-12 the Greek word translated “blessed” is used nine times and simply means “happy.” Those two words can be freely interchanged when reading that portion of Scripture.

MacArthur continues with the following:

The first twelve verses of the Sermon on the Mount explain the purpose of Jesus’ sermon: that believers know true happiness. The rest of the sermon deals with how happiness is possible and the life-style that produces true happiness.

As we follow the word of God, apply it into our own lives, we are empowered to come to know a greater and more authentic sense of happiness within our own hearts and lives. In so doing, we are also engaged in empowering others to discover for themselves the nature of that true happiness that is found in coming unto Christ.

Today, as we continue into the new year of transformation, let us ponder where we are seeking our happiness. Are we seeking after external things to put our trust in that may bring us happiness? If so, this will become short lived and we will become tired of it. However, if one is seeking an authentic and true happiness that is enduring and ever maturing, then we must turn our hearts and minds toward Jesus Christ and through the power of our faith and Grace in Christ alone, is there sustainable true happiness in our lives. Happiness is one of the many authentic trademarks of a transformed life that has been fully turned over to the will of a Sovereign God.

  1. Great post! Too many professed Christians want to be happy, but they don’t want the conditions that come with the true joy that is only found by having a right relationship where Jesus is Lord. Recognizing God’s place as Lord and living in a way that expresses that brings about wonderful blessings. It doesn’t mean life is easy and pain-free, but you find a joy deeper than just a feeling. Thanks for sharing! =)

    1. Adriel – Thank you for posting your comment. I agree, there is a false sense of happiness within and without the Christian faith. Many people are seeking external aspects to secure happiness. That only goes so far before we become weary and tired. Soon, we are chasing after things rather than seeking after the Kingdom of God. Authentic happiness is within our own grasps when we turn away from the external things and look within our own hearts and see where our loyalty rests. Thus, our happiness rests upon Christ whom we claim to worship and follow.

  3. Amen brother Christ is our real happiness and when we live out and express Him, others can sense this real joy too and thus be drawn to Him. May our joy be testimonies to others .

    1. I agree with you. When we place our trust into the hands of our beloved Savior, we begin to discover the nature of true happiness. Not only in this life, but also long into the life to come that we will stand and receive our own reward for enduring and overcoming as Christ had endured and overcame the world.
